Water damage to cellphones is a longstanding issue, with rice often touted as a remedy. Apple’s latest guidance, however, challenges this conventional wisdom.
The company cautions against the use of rice, suggesting it could potentially hinder the drying process and harm internal components, particularly the logic board.
Instead of resorting to rice, Apple advises a different approach for waterlogged iPhones. The recommended first step involves;
Lightly tapping the device against one’s hand with the charging port facing downward. This action aims to dislodge any trapped water. Subsequently, the iPhone should be left in a dry environment with adequate airflow for approximately 30 minutes.
After this initial period, users can attempt to recharge their iPhones. If successful, it indicates the absence of water damage, allowing normal usage to resume.
However, if the device indicates the presence of liquid in the charging port, Apple recommends refraining from using heat-based drying methods and instead advises leaving the iPhone in a dry area with airflow for 24 hours.
Should the iPhone still fail to charge or exhibit signs of water damage after this period, alternative charging methods are suggested, such as wireless charging to avoid further damage to the charging port. Users encountering persistent issues are advised to contact Apple for repair or replacement, ensuring data backup beforehand to prevent potential loss during servicing.
