Former Tottenham and Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino has been appointed as the new head coach of the United States men’s national soccer team.
Pochettino, 52, succeeds Gregg Berhalter, who was dismissed in July after the USA’s early exit from the Copa America.
Pochettino expressed his excitement, stating that his decision to join US Soccer was motivated by more than just football. He highlighted the potential and passion within the team and the country, emphasizing his ambition to build a team that could make the nation proud.
US Soccer sporting director Matt Crocker, who previously worked with Pochettino at Southampton, praised the Argentine as a “serial winner” with a passion for player development, noting his proven success in building competitive teams.
Pochettino’s managerial career includes leading Tottenham Hotspur to the 2019 Champions League final and stints at Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea, where he left after one season. His new role comes as the U.S. prepares to co-host the 2026 World Cup alongside Canada and Mexico.
With Pochettino’s appointment, both the US men’s and women’s teams are now managed by former Chelsea coaches, with Emma Hayes leading the women’s side.
