Team GB event rider Laura Collett set an Olympic record on the first day of the Paris Games, achieving the lowest-ever score in the dressage phase with a personal best of 17.5 aboard her bay gelding, London 52.
This score surpasses the previous record of 19.3 held by the USA since the 2000 Sydney Olympics and puts her seven marks ahead of her rivals.
Laura, who helped secure a team gold at the Tokyo Olympics, expressed her gratitude, saying, “That horse [London 52] is unbelievable. I’m just very, very grateful to him.”
Her teammate, Tom McEwen, and his horse, JL Dublin, scored a respectable 25.8. The final Team GB score will come from Ros Canter and her horse, Lordships Gruffalo.
Eventing includes dressage, cross-country, and showjumping phases. The rider with the lowest overall score wins, with penalties added for any mistakes.
