At the main bowl of Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, Delta state, over a thousand athletes from one hundred schools will compete in a five-day athletics tournament dubbed “Making Of Champions, MTN Champs Season Two” in a variety of categories.
The events are relays for boys and girls under the ages of 14 and 17, high jump, long jump, and 100, 200, and 400 meters.
The president of the Nigerian Athletics Federation, Tonobok Okowa, stated during a press conference in Asaba that the event would serve as a warm-up for the continental and international competitions and that it was crucial to the next African Games and the Olympics.
While cautioning competitors not to get hurt, he also foresaw further surprises, even as the organizers declared that sufficient preparations had been done to ensure the sports festival began without a hitch.
“We know that the African Games is coming up, and by the grace of God, we are going to have our and we are doing it in collaboration with sponsors. Athletes representing the country would make the nation proud.
“Of course, we have a lot of foreign based athletes that will not be able to make it. But those at home that are as very good as the foreign based, will be competing, for us to select those that will be in camps for the African championship that will represent us in Ghana and will also help us to prepare for the Olympics.
