Jose Peseiro, the coach of the Super Eagles, has disclosed that he declined a contract extension offered by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) in order to postpone it until after the current Africa Cup of Nations.
Nigeria defeated Guinea-Bissau 1-0 on Monday to advance to the AFCON’s second round, where they will take on Cameroon on Saturday.
Shortly before the AFCON kicked off, Ibrahim Gusau, the president of the NFF, informed the federation would determine Peseiro’s future following the championship. He also added that the Portuguese player would need to fulfill specific requirements in order to receive a new contract.
Peseiro claimed he had read a lot of false information on his time in Nigeria, and that the European media had used these reports to distort the truth.
“There are many challenges, but I have never and I will not expose them,” he stated. There is a ton of false information out there.
Will I carry on as the team’s leader? My contract expires at the end of the AFCON, and they have already suggested renewing it, but I declined.
In September, Peseiro was given a new contract that expires after the AFCON, however it has a lower income (from $70,000 to $50,000).
When the Super Eagles play the Indomitable Lions on Saturday, the manager of the squad has predicted that Victor Osimhen, the African Footballer of the Year, will destroy Cameroon.
In Nigeria’s three group stage matches at the 2018 AFCON, Osimhen has been criticized for missing opportunities that his team produced. However, Peseiro told Nigerians that the Napoli star would perform well on Saturday.
“Osimhen will score in our next game; he’s crucial to the team,” he declared. Although he leads the score, the competition is fierce and the tournament is different. Because he produced so many opportunities and scored against Equatorial Guinea, he is deserving of the top spot.
Was Equatorial Guinea superior to us? No, we tied for the point, and since this competition is tough, I’m confident that we will defeat them the next time.
