The gunman who attempted to assassinate former President Donald Trump Saturday has been identified, according to the New York Post.
He has been identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks.
One of Crooks’ bullets grazed the former President in the ear during an outdoor rally in Butler, just outside Pittsburgh.
Sources told the New York Post that Crooks was stationed on the roof of a manufacturing plant over 130 yards from the stage at Butler Farm Show grounds.
Crooks was shot dead by Secret Service snipers, and an AR-style rifle was recovered from him.
Bethel Park is a village 40 miles south of the rally location in Butler.
The motive behind Crooks’ assassination attempt on Trump, the Republican presidential candidate, remains unclear.
When asked if law enforcement did not know the shooter was on the roof until he began firing, FBI Special Agent in Charge of Pittsburgh field office, Kevin Rojek responded, “that is our assessment at this time.
“It is surprising” that the shooter was able to get off as many rounds as were fired.
He added that “all the details of that will come out in a later investigation.”
