“This is a mass-casualty, multi-agency event,” says Kevin Cartwright, the spokesperson of Baltimore fire department today, following the tragic incident of a container-cargo ship moving past the Francis Scott Key Bridge.
The container ship crossed into the four-lane bridge in the U.S. port of Baltimore in the dark early hours of today, Tuesday, hence it’s collapse and sending cars and people plunging into the river below.
The ship was said to have “lost propulsion” upon leaving the port, and crew on board notified Maryland officials they had lost control of the vessel.
Two survivors have been pulled out by rescuers as officials speculated about seven(7) or more cars plunged into the river. One of the survivors is said to be in a “very serious condition,” and search for more in the Patapsco River is going on after huge spans of the 1.6-mile (2.57 km) Francis Scott Key Bridge crumpled into the water.
Kevin continued, “numerous vehicles, and possibly a tractor-trailer or a vehicle as large as a tractor-trailer, (that) went into the river.” as he added the rescue operation would last days.
Maryland Governor Wes Moore declared a state of emergency to quickly deploy federal resources to deal with the emergency as Baltimore port halts the operations of ships inward and outwardly.
