South Korea’s opposition-controlled National Assembly voted to impeach acting President Han Duck-soo on Friday, December 27, 2024.
The impeachment motion was passed with a 192-0 vote, with lawmakers from the governing People Power Party boycotting the vote and protesting the decision.
Han Duck-soo, serving as acting president after President Yoon Suk Yeol was impeached earlier this month, will be stripped of his powers and duties until the Constitutional Court decides whether to dismiss or reinstate him. The court is already reviewing whether to uphold Yoon’s earlier impeachment.
The impeachment of the president and the acting president has deepened South Korea’s political crisis, increased economic uncertainty, and damaged its international image. The deputy prime minister and finance minister, Choi Sang-mok, will take over as acting president.
The impeachment motion against Han was filed after he refused to appoint three judges to the Constitutional Court, which is crucial for the court’s ruling on Yoon’s impeachment.
The opposition Democratic Party argued that Han’s refusal to appoint the judges obstructed the impeachment process.
