As part of the West African country’s to deepen security ties with Moscow, Russian military trainer has arrived in Niger to assist in installing an air defense system and other equipment to ensure complete control of the airspace.
In January, the military administration of Niger opted to increase military collaboration with Russia following the expulsion of French personnel that were assisting in fighting Jihadists uprising in multiple Sahel countries.
Niger, one of the poorest countries has been battling Jihadists in the Sahel has finally turned to Russia since the elected president was ousted last year. They have joined neighboring countries as Mali and Burkina Faso also ruled by military leaders after coups to join forces to fight long-running insurgencies.
General Abdourahamane Tiani, the head of Niger’s military government who spoke with Russia President Vladimir Putin via telephone discussed the security cooperation against current threats in the nation on March 26.
Although, there are about 1000 US troops in Niger, Washington has restricted their movements and reduced government support since the coup.
