Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has praised former U.S. President Donald Trump for his “common sense” approach to ending the war in Ukraine, while criticizing European powers for prolonging the conflict.
Lavrov’s comments were made during a press conference in Ankara, Turkey.
“Donald Trump is a pragmatist. His slogan is common sense. It means, as everyone can see, a shift to a different way of doing things.
“But the goal is still MAGA (Make America Great Again). This gives a lively, human character to politics. That’s why it’s interesting to work with him,” Lavrov said.
Key Points:
- Praise for Trump: Lavrov commended Trump’s pragmatic approach and his aim to end the war in Ukraine. He described Trump as a pragmatist whose slogan, “Make America Great Again” (MAGA), brings a lively and human character to politics.
- Criticism of Europe: Lavrov accused European powers of seeking to extend the conflict in Ukraine. He argued that Europe has been the source of many global tragedies over the past 500 years, including colonization, wars, and the actions of historical figures like Napoleon and Hitler.
- Historical Context: The conflict in Ukraine began in 2014 after a pro-Russian president was toppled in Ukraine’s Maidan Revolution, leading to Russia’s annexation of Crimea and the ongoing war in eastern Ukraine.
According to him, the United States still wants to be the world’s most powerful country, stating that Washington and Moscow would never see eye to eye on everything but had agreed to be pragmatic when interests coincided.
