A “massive” Russian hypersonic missile attack on Kyiv on Monday morning hit Ohmatdyt Children’s Hospital, killing nine people, according to local officials.
The strike affected areas where children were receiving dialysis and damaged the intensive care, operating, and oncology departments.
The attack was part of a barrage of over 40 missiles targeting various Ukrainian cities, leaving 22 people dead and around 50 injured, according to Kyiv’s interior minister.
According to Kyiv’s military, Vladimir Putin’s troops have dropped over 100 deadly glide bombs on Ukrainian territory amid intense fighting in the east of the country.
The Russian army used 111 Soviet-era KAB bombs, which have been upgraded with precision guidance systems, to target Ukrainian positions and settlements over the past 24 hours.
These munitions, weighing more than a tonne each, are typically deployed from aircraft and have the capability to devastate entire multistorey buildings, experts say.
Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskiy has now confirmed these reports, naming the hospital in a post on X.
He said:
Okhmatdyt has been saving and restoring the health of thousands of children. Now that the hospital has been damaged by a Russian strike, there are people under the rubble, and the exact number of casualties is still unknown.
Right now, everyone is helping to clear the rubble – doctors and ordinary people.
Meanwhile, Kyiv has withdrawn its soldiers from the outskirts of the eastern town of Chasiv Yar, where they are reportedly losing ground to advancing Russian forces.
