Kenya’s Senate began debating the impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Wednesday, following his failure to halt the proceedings in court.
The Lower House voted to impeach him last week on charges of corruption and abuse of office, but Gachagua, who denies the allegations, remains in office pending the Senate’s decision, expected Thursday.
Gachagua’s legal team argued the process was rushed and unfair, but two High Court rulings have cleared the way for the Senate debate to continue.
President William Ruto has yet to comment publicly on the matter.
