Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the First Lady of Nigeria, has stated that her husband, President Bola Tinubu, should not be blamed for the current economic hardship in the country, following the removal of fuel subsidies.
The removal, which caused petrol prices to rise from ₦198 to ₦1,030, has left Nigerians struggling with increased costs.
Speaking at the Palace of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, on Thursday, the First Lady emphasized that the Tinubu administration is still in its early stages and working to address the economic challenges.
She reassured Nigerians that improvements would come in the next two years, noting that previous administrations had attempted to remove the subsidy but could not complete the process.
“We are just two years into our administration. We are not the cause of the current situation; we are trying to fix it and secure the future. With your prayers, in the next two years, we will build a nation for the future,” she said.
Mrs. Tinubu also praised her husband, describing him as a humble man, and expressed gratitude to God for their positions. During her visit, she inaugurated a hostel and a 2.7-kilometer road at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile Ife, donated by the Ooni of Ife, and announced a donation of ₦1 billion to support the university’s development.
The Ooni of Ife commended the First Lady for her longstanding dedication to youth empowerment, noting her influential role during her time as First Lady of Lagos State.
