The Sokoto State House of Assembly has approved the Sokoto Emirate Council Amendment Bill in its first and second readings.
If enacted, the bill will remove the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III’s authority to appoint kingmakers and district heads without government approval, among other changes.
This development follows concerns raised by the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) about an alleged plan by the Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, to depose the Sultan of Sokoto.
On Monday, MURIC’s Executive Director, Prof. Isiaq Akintola, voiced alarm over this possible action, which comes amid controversy and tension after the removal of several monarchs in Kano State.
Vice President Kashim Shettima also cautioned against disrespecting the stool of the Sultan.
Sokoto State Government, however, in separate statements responded to the Islamic organization and the Vice President.
The Vice President was urged to verify facts before issuing comments and MURIC’s claim was tagged as false.
