Dr. Doyin Okupe, a former presidential spokesperson, has defended President Bola Tinubu’s two-week holiday trip to the United Kingdom, stating that those criticizing the President’s decision are uninformed.
In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday, Okupe emphasized that Tinubu’s time abroad is not just a vacation but also a necessary retreat.
Okupe explained that, during periods of national crisis, it is common for leaders to separate themselves from their usual environment to reflect, assess the situation, and plan for the future.
He noted that staying in Nigeria would likely not provide the President with the peace and serenity required to achieve such thoughtful reflection.
Okupe further expressed confidence that Tinubu’s return after this retreat would bring about positive changes for Nigerians, with the possibility of new cabinet appointments and other significant developments aimed at improving the country’s economic and social conditions.
President Tinubu departed Abuja on October 2, 2024, for his first official leave since assuming office in May 2023.
His Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, had earlier stated that the trip was also a working vacation, intended to allow the President to reflect on his administration’s economic reforms.
