Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has criticized members of the National Assembly for determining their own salaries and allowances, calling the practice immoral.
Obasanjo made these remarks on Friday while hosting some members of the House of Representatives in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
He argued that it is the responsibility of the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMFAC) to set the compensation for public officeholders, not the officeholders themselves.
Obasanjo pointed out that it is unethical for individuals to decide their own pay and allowances, including what he described as “newspaper allowances” and even “pant allowances.”
Obasanjo also highlighted that beyond setting their own salaries, some members of the National Assembly have received benefits from the executive branch that they are not entitled to, mentioning an instance where lawmakers allegedly received ₦200 million each.
He emphasized that such practices are not only improper but also a breach of ethical standards.
