The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to declare a state of emergency in the state.
The call was made by APC’s Caretaker Committee Chairman in Rivers State, Chief Tony Okocha while addressing journalists on Wednesday in Port Harcourt, the state’s capital.
According to Okocha, this is not unconnected to the ongoing political crisis over the tenure of chairmen of the 23 local government areas across the state.
He said an urgent action is needed to prevent the crisis from escalating. He claimed it will definitely affect the economy of Nigeria considering the position of the state in the country if allowed to go on.
Recall, Siminalayi Fubara, in the early hours of Tuesday ordered LGA Chairmen to hand over to the Heads of Admin in their respective LGAs.
Some of the Chairmen, who were suspected to be loyal to Former Governor Nyesom Wike refused to vacate the seat. They claimed their tenure has been extended by a faction of the Rivers State House of Assembly.
However, the Rivers State Governor nominated new caretaker Chairmen late Tuesday night before they were confirmed by the Victor Jumbo-led House of Assembly on Wednesday.
