The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Kano State has reported that 20 chairmanship aspirants tested positive for multiple drugs during the screening process ahead of the local government elections.
These candidates, all from the ruling NNPP party, were found to have consumed substances like opioids, cannabis, benzodiazepines, and nicotine.
According to NDLEA Commander Abubakar Idris Ahmad, no female candidates have tested positive yet, but the screening is still ongoing, with more aspirants expected to undergo testing before the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) completes the verification process.
The elections, scheduled for October 26, 2024, will see 44 chairmanship and 484 councillorship positions contested.
