A Nigerian policeman, identified as Inspector Collins Wilson, reportedly shot and killed three individuals in an attempt to cover up a theft committed by his girlfriend, known only as Esther, on Monday, August 26th.
The incident began when Esther was accused of stealing a phone from a tricycle driver who had been transporting her.
Eyewitnesses reported that the phone rang in Esther’s possession, sparking a confrontation with bystanders.
As tensions grew, Esther called her boyfriend, Inspector Wilson, to the scene. Upon arriving, Wilson drew his service weapon, ordered Esther to stand behind him, and opened fire, killing two individuals on the spot. The victims included the tricycle driver and a bystander who tried to mediate the situation.
A third individual, the motorcyclist who had transported Wilson to the scene, was critically injured. He was initially taken to Garki Hospital but was reportedly rejected. He later died at the National Hospital, where doctors were on strike and unable to provide proper attention.
After the shooting, Wilson fled the scene with Esther, switching vehicles multiple times to avoid detection. However, the motorcyclist who transported Wilson back to his post directed angry residents to his location. The community mobilized, apprehended Inspector Wilson and Esther, and handed them over to the police.
As of Tuesday, authorities have not released an official statement, but local residents, in an act of protest, brought two of the victims’ bodies to the police command, demanding justice for the slain individuals.
