On Wednesday, the House of Representatives urged the administration of President Bola Tinubu to take a second look at all of the country’s unfinished projects and finish them so that Nigerians can use them.
During Wednesday’s plenary session, the House bemoaned the quantity of infrastructure projects that have been abandoned by succeeding administrations.
The bill’s sponsor and member representing Ijebu North/Ijebu East/Ogun Waterside, Joseph Adegbesan, led the debate on the motion, “Need to access and fix abandoned Federal Government projects across the country.” He expressed disappointment about the country’s project abandonment.
According to Adegbesan, there are approximately 60,000 abandoned projects in Nigeria that have a total estimated value of trillions of Naira. These projects prevent citizens from using their natural resources and tax revenues.
The legislator said to his colleagues that the projects’ goals were to raise Nigerians’ level of living through electrification, improved power, portable water supply, high-quality education, healthcare facilities, and the building of roads and bridges.
He went on, “Successful administrations have been ignoring these projects, disregarding their importance to Nigerians and taxpayers’ money spent, on the grounds that it was not initiated by their government or within their policy direction.”
As a result, the House directed its Committee on Works to examine all FG projects that have been shelved nationwide, taking into account the “scope of work, commencement date, contract value, the amount spent, and stage of work through Ministries, Departments, and Agencies with a workable plan to effectively complete the projects.”
The committee has four weeks to finish its work and submit a report to the House so that additional legislation can be taken.
