A tragic stampede occurred in the Okija community, Anambra State, on Saturday morning, December 21, 2024, during a rice distribution event.
At least 20 residents are feared dead, with many others injured. Eyewitnesses described the chaotic scene, noting that the victims were predominantly women. Multiple social media videos show lifeless bodies scattered on the ground after the incident.
Charles Aburime, the Chief Press Secretary to the Anambra governor, confirmed the occurrence and stated that the state government is closely monitoring the situation.
He mentioned that the government would soon release an official statement.
This heartbreaking incident comes just days after a similar tragedy in Ibadan, Oyo State, where over 35 people, mostly children, died in a stampede during a carnival.
Meanwhile, a similar event occurred in Abuja on Saturday during a palliative distribution at Holy Trinity Catholic church.
