Medical experts have suggested that sleeping without clothing could boost sperm production in men by allowing the testicles to cool down.
They advise men hoping to become fathers to sleep naked at night, as this practice may enhance fertility by improving sperm quality.
According to the US National Library of Medicine’s Biotech Information, cooling the scrotum directly influences sperm health and motility. The US medical journal also supports the idea that sleeping naked helps maintain an optimal temperature for testicular health, which is crucial for sperm quality.
Professor Olufemi Fasanmade, an expert in Medicine and Endocrinology at the College of Medicine, University of Lagos, emphasized that cooler conditions and loose clothing, or sleeping naked, can help maintain optimal sperm production.
He noted that tight-fitting underwear and warm weather could negatively affect sperm production, whereas looser garments or sleeping naked can promote better sperm formation.
Dr. Chidumeje Okafor, a Family Physician with the Anambra State Ministry of Health, also highlighted various benefits of sleeping naked, categorizing them into sleep, psychological, health, and reproductive advantages.
He mentioned that men who sleep naked have been found to have 25% less DNA fragmentation in their sperm, which can significantly impact fertility.
In terms of women’s health, Dr. Okafor pointed out that sleeping naked could reduce the risk of yeast infections by keeping the genital area cool and dry, thereby preventing the growth of yeast that thrives in warm, moist environments.
Supporting these claims, a study by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development in Maryland and Stanford University monitored 500 men over a year.
The research found that men who wore boxers during the day and slept naked at night had 25% less DNA fragmentation in their sperm compared to those who wore tight briefs both day and night.
This study, along with evidence from medical journals like ScienceDirect, suggests that DNA fragmentation, which is more common in infertile men, can negatively affect reproductive outcomes.
Therefore, the type of underwear worn during the day and at night can have a significant impact on semen quality and overall fertility.
