To save the lives of preterm or premature babies, the Kangaroo mother care has been advised to be adopted by mothers.
Chijioke Ezeudu, an associate professor of Paediatric, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi has stated that the Kangaroo mother care should be adopted as its provide cheapest and simple method of preserving lives of premature babies in situations where incubators are not available. It gives almost the same result as baby nursed in an incubator all over the world.
“A Kangaroo delivers its babies prematurely, attached to its mother’s pouch feed on its mothers breast permanently till it becomes matures fully.”
He describe the kangaroo mother care as a method that uses a pouch made from local fabrics to attach a premature baby in between the mothers breast to ensure skin to skin contact.
The continuous attachment could take 18 hours per day, while the intermittent attachment takes two, four to six hours daily.
“The baby’s heartbeat and respiration can be equalized with the mother’s as well as enabling comfortable breastfeeding while the mother continues with her normal chores in the home.
“This practice can allow anybody around the mother to also assist in providing warmness for the baby if the mother is exhausted,” he added.
