Men with enlarged breasts, a condition known as gynaecomastia, are urged to undergo medical evaluation, as health experts warn that this abnormal development could indicate underlying health problems.
In an interview with PUNCH Healthwise, consultant endocrinologists explained that while some cases may be benign, gynaecomastia can result from hormonal imbalances, liver or kidney disease, certain medications, or even tumors.
The specialists highlighted the importance of early diagnosis to address potential health risks and recommended treatments, including breast tissue reduction surgery when necessary. They emphasized that delaying medical consultation could lead to complications or ongoing discomfort.
Johns Hopkins Medicine defines gynaecomastia as the enlargement or overdevelopment of breast tissue in males, affecting individuals of all ages. The condition often emerges during puberty due to hormonal changes, but it can also occur in newborns, adolescents, and aging adults.
The National Library of Medicine notes that this development typically happens in three phases: shortly after birth due to maternal hormones, during puberty, and in old age, starting around age 60.
