The National Library of Nigeria has opened a special section, named Green Library, exclusively for children and young adults between the ages of 4 and 17 in the country.
The Green Library, which resides on the ground floor of the National Library in Yaba, Lagos, is aimed at setting the standard and creating a friendly environment in Nigeria and throughout Africa.
The design will be replicated at library branches across the country, adorned with natural elements such as wooden logs used for tables and chairs, decorated with flowers, and equipped with lots of books and other reading materials.
The deputy of the National Library, Lagos office, Mrs. Obianiju Onuorah, who spoke at the launching on Tuesday, said that the library is the first of its kind, and they are in partnership with a private charity organisation, Zaccheus Onumba Dibiaezue Memorial Libraries (ZODML), which brought about the idea to enable children to grow with knowledge of their environment and help to save the planet.
ZODML runs the biggest free online library in Nigeria and gives physical services to underprivileged communities, local schools, and correctional centres in some parts of the country, with users accessing materials such as journals, books, and articles free of charge.
Onuorah, thanked ZODML for their partnership and urged the government, public to support the project by donating more resources to the library, adding that apart from the general reading section, there are other sections where children can do their schoolwork and play games to have fun.
It will be opened from Monday to Friday, with shorter hours for Saturdays.
