The Federal Government has dismissed claims that the Ministry of Petroleum Resources instructed the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) to sell fuel at ₦1,000 per liter.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Special Adviser on Media and Communication to the Minister for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Heineken Lokpobiri, Nnemaka Okafor, the report was labeled as false and designed to create confusion in the oil sector.
The statement clarified that the Federal Government has never intervened in NNPCL’s pricing decisions, asserting that NNPCL operates independently under the Companies and Allied Matters Act with its own Board of Directors.
It emphasized that any claims suggesting government interference in fuel pricing are baseless and part of a deliberate effort to mislead the public.
The statement read, “We categorically condemn these claims as baseless, malicious, and a deliberate attempt to incite public discontent.”
It further challenged anyone with proof of the allegations to make it public, reiterating that the Ministry of Petroleum does not influence NNPCL’s pricing decisions, highlighting the deregulated nature of Nigeria’s petroleum sector.
