The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) is set to announce a new tariff plan on December 13, 2024.
This move comes as telecom operators face rising operational costs, weakening Naira, and increasing prices for energy and infrastructure maintenance.
The Association of Licensed Telecom Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) and the Association of Telecommunication Companies of Nigeria (ATCON) have been advocating for a tariff hike, arguing that the current prices are insufficient to maintain their business operations. They claim that the telecom sector may not survive without an upward review of tariffs.
However, subscriber associations like the Association of Telephones, Cable TV, and Internet Subscribers of Nigeria (ATCIS) oppose the proposed hike, citing the current economic realities and the impact on consumers.
The NCC has been consulting with relevant stakeholders to ensure that any tariff increase is balanced and fair to both operators and subscribers.
The new tariff plan aims to simplify the existing tariff structure and ensure transparency and fairness in promotional elements.
