Public discontent continues to mount over the Bola Tinubu administration’s decision to make several high-cost acquisitions despite the country’s struggling economy.
One of the most talked-about purchases is the ₦150 billion presidential jet, sparking outrage among Nigerians who are grappling with economic hardship.
The decision to acquire the Airbus A330 has been seen as tone-deaf, especially given the 33% inflation rate attributed to the government’s subsidy removal and exchange rate unification policies.
In addition to the new jet, there have been several other controversial expenses:
- Presidential Yacht: Despite public outcry, the government reportedly went ahead with purchasing a ₦5 billion yacht, even though it was not approved by the National Assembly.
- ₦21 Billion House for Vice President: The government completed the official residence of the Vice President at a time when infrastructure projects across the country remain underfunded.
- ₦160 Million Cars for Lawmakers: The National Assembly members were provided with luxury SUVs costing ₦160 million per unit, raising questions about priorities.
- ₦90 Billion Hajj Subsidy: This year, the government spent ₦90 billion on subsidies for the 2024 Hajj, an amount that is now under investigation by anti-corruption agencies.
These lavish expenditures have drawn significant backlash from various quarters, including former ministers and civil society leaders, who have called for more prudent use of public funds in light of the ongoing economic challenges.
