The Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) has agreed to restore electricity supply to some sections of the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan in Oyo State within 48 hours, following a 100-day power outage.
This decision came after a meeting between the Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, the management of UCH led by its Chief Medical Director, Professor Jesse Otegbayo, and the management of IBEDC led by its Managing Director, Francis Agoha.
The power outage, which began in October 2024 due to an outstanding debt of over ₦283 million, had severely impacted the hospital’s operations and the students’ studies.
During the meeting, medical students staged a protest, displaying placards with messages like “Save UCH; Give Us Light; This Is Not How We Want To Live”.
The Minister of Power emphasized that the power crisis was an embarrassment to both the hospital and the Federal Government and announced that the Federal Government would install a 50 MW solar mini-grid at the hospital to prevent future outages.
