The Federal Government has launched the Presidential Food Systems Coordination Unit (PFSCU) to address the current challenges in the country.
During the inauguration at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Vice President Kashim Shettima emphasized that this initiative is part of the government’s ongoing strategy to combat hunger and food insecurity.
The presidency has also involved states, development partners, and other key stakeholders in collaborative efforts to mitigate the impact of high commodity prices and ensure food stability.
Speaking to an audience including governors, cabinet ministers, and representatives of development partners, Shettima underscored the severity of the food security crisis, urging swift collective action to address the situation.
“Food insecurity endangers the very basis of our democratic experiment and this is why all hands have to be on deck. We are in a food security crisis but it also provides us the opportunity to re-engineer and reposition the nation on a firmer footing,” he said.
The Vice President outlined that the PFSCU’s mandate does not overlap with the Ministry of Agriculture but aims to leverage the collective efforts of all stakeholders to address urgent food security challenges.
Shettima highlighted the importance of activating and implementing initiatives like the Green Imperative Programme, a collaborative effort between the government and the private sector to industrialize agriculture.
He emphasized that by enhancing agricultural practices, adopting better seeds, and increasing fertilizer use, Nigeria can significantly improve its agricultural productivity and enhance food security nationwide.
