Cameroon’s ninety one year-old President Paul Biya, has announced his intention to run for an eighth term in the 2025 Presidential Election.
Biya has led the country since 1982, having served as the country’s Prime Minister for seven years, from 1975 to 1982, under then-President Ahmadou Ahidjo.
He has controversially postponed the country’s Parliamentary and Municipal elections until 2026, citing security concerns in the Anglophone regions.
These areas, particularly the North West and South West, have been in turmoil since 2016, with armed groups fighting for independence due to perceived marginalization by the Francophone-dominated government.
Biya, who has been in power since 1982, has faced growing criticism for his authoritarian governance style, including suppressing opposition, limiting press freedom, and using security forces to maintain control.
Despite these criticisms, he has remained in power through elections often deemed fraudulent by critics.
