Kano, Two Others declare Curfew

The Governments of Kano, Yobe and Borno have imposed curfew in response to the ongoing protests and security threat in their respective states.

Governor Abba Yusuf, who announced the imposition of the curfew shortly, after Nationwide Protest in Kano on Thursday, said, the curfew is with immediate effect.

He bemoaned how the demonstration, which was meant to be peaceful was hijacked by thugs and hoodlums who resorted to looting of business premises, government properties and maiming of innocent citizens.

“After exhaustive deliberations during Emergency State Security council meeting, it was collectively decided that 24-hour curfew should be put in place to prevent further looting and vandalization of shops including indiscriminate killing and maiming of innocent citizens.”

“On this note therefore, and based on the powers conferred on me by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as the Chief Security Officer of the State, I have therefore, declared 24-hours curfew in the State with immediate effect,” he said.

In a similar development, the Police in Borno on Thursday imposed a 24-hour curfew across the state in response to the suicide attack in Kawuri Village in Konduga Local Government Area that killed 16 people and injured 20 others amid the August protest in the country.

“The curfew is a measure to prevent further loss of life and property and to allow security agencies to maintain control and ensure public safety.

“Residents are advised to stay indoors and avoid any unnecessary movements during the curfew period,” Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Daso, made this known in a statement released in Maiduguri, Borno State capital.

Meanwhile, the Yobe state government has enforced a 24-hour curfew in Potiskum, Gashua, and Nguru towns, where some miscreants are exploiting the protest to vandalize and loot both government and private properties.

Dairy Abdulsalam, the Special Adviser to Governor Mai Mala Buni on Security Matters, urged the public to comply with the curfew order and remain at home to maintain peace in the affected areas and the state at large.

He added that security agencies have been instructed to ensure strict enforcement and full adherence to the curfew order.
