Ghana’s former President, John Dramani Mahama, has made a political comeback by winning the presidential election.
His rival, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, conceded defeat on Sunday.
During a press conference from his residence, Bawumia stated that he had called Mahama to congratulate him and acknowledged that Mahama’s National Democratic Congress (NDC) also won the parliamentary election.
Bawumia mentioned that their internal collation of election results indicated a decisive victory for Mahama. He added that although the final collation of some seats was still pending, it was unlikely to change the overall outcome.
Bawumia conceded before the official results to ease tensions, as scuffles had been reported in several local constituency centers where results were still being received.
In his concession speech, Bawumia emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and preserving Ghana’s democratic character to ensure continued confidence from the global investor community.
He expressed respect for the people’s decision for change with humility.
