WhatsApp has been working on a feature that would allow users to create unique usernames, providing an alternative way to connect without sharing phone numbers.
A recent WhatsApp beta for Android (version 2.24.18.2) suggests that the platform might also introduce an optional PIN system as an added security layer for username-based interactions.
This PIN feature would allow users to set a code that others must enter to initiate chats, reducing the risk of spam or unwanted contact.
Users can change their PIN if it becomes public and even disable the PIN for easier access, if preferred.
Additionally, WhatsApp may give users the choice of whether to display their username or phone number in new chats, adding a layer of privacy.
These features are still in development and not yet available for beta testers, so there is no confirmed release timeline for when WhatsApp might roll them out.
