WhatsApp has rolled out a new feature that allows users to mention specific contacts in their status updates, similar to how Instagram stories work.
Available to some users through the latest WhatsApp beta update for Android (version 2.24.20.3), the feature has been in development for months and is now being publicly tested.
This update enables users to tag contacts in status updates, sending them a direct notification. The goal is to streamline engagement by making it easier for users to involve specific people in conversations through status updates. When adding photos or videos to a status, users will see a button in the caption bar to tag contacts.
Only the tagged individuals will be notified, while other viewers won’t see who has been mentioned. Additionally, tagged contacts can reshare the status with their own audience using a new reshare button, though the original creator’s identity remains anonymous.
By introducing this feature, WhatsApp is aligning with Meta’s other platforms like Instagram and Facebook, enhancing the interactivity of its app.
A while ago, it was reported that WhatsApp is working on a feature that would allow users to create unique usernames, providing an alternative way to connect without sharing phone numbers.
