Huawei, on Tuesday, introduced the Mate XT, claimed to be the world’s first trifold smartphone, just hours after Apple unveiled its AI-focused iPhone 16.
The Mate XT, showcased by Huawei executive Richard Yu at the company’s Shenzhen headquarters, features a distinctive red and gold design and will be available for purchase starting September 20, with prices beginning at 19,999 yuan ($2,800).
The Huawei Mate XT features three modules, offering a versatile display experience that can be used as a single-screen, dual-screen, or fully unfolded triple-screen device.
When fully opened, the phone’s thickness is reduced to just 3.6mm (on the non-camera side).
Weighing 298g and boasting a 10-inch foldable display, the Mate XT is a notable advancement in Huawei’s foldable phone lineup, compared to the Mate X5 which weighs 245g with a 7.85-inch screen.
Huawei, which is currently China’s fourth-largest smartphone maker, has previously led the foldable phone market.
Despite US sanctions that have impacted its business, Huawei’s domestic market share remains strong, especially in the foldable segment where it holds over half of the market.
Analysts view the Mate XT as a potential boost to Huawei’s technological leadership, though some believe its impact on Apple’s premium market share will be limited due to its high price and niche appeal.
