CES 2024: The Case for Budget-Friendly OLEDs Instead of Transparent TV Hype

CES 2024 has been bustling with the anticipated array of new television releases, but amidst the excitement, LG and Samsung have made striking announcements in the realm of TV technology. While our TV/AV editor, Tom Parsons, has lauded TCL’s colossal 115-inch QM891G mini LED, the real spotlight for me came through LG and Samsung’s unveiling of new “transparent” TV displays.

Samsung’s revelation, a proof-of-concept transparent micro LED TV, might not be intended for household use, aligning with the ongoing trend where most micro LED TVs carry exorbitant price tags. Yet, the sheer audacity and innovation behind these products deserve commendation. LG, in particular, stands out for its forward-thinking approach, proposing a next-gen product that’s primed for real-world application, boasting impressive specifications.

While the technical and pricing details of LG’s OLED T are pending, it’s known to operate on the same wireless technology and processor as the new M4 Wireless OLED TV. This implies a promise of a cable-free setup, promising a discreet home cinema experience without compromising your living room’s aesthetics.

However, as remarkable as these advancements are, I find myself longing for a different focus from these companies. Amidst the introduction of transparent TV tech, I can’t help but wish that LG and Samsung had devoted more time, attention, and resources toward democratizing OLED display technology and enhancing high-end TV experiences for the more budget-friendly market segment.
