A celebrated educator with multiple awards from reputable educational institutions like Cambridge University Press & Assessment and Suraasa (International Teachers’ Olympiad), Mr. Lanre Oguntoye, who is also an assistant principal at Greensprings School, Anthony Campus, has stated that the use of Artificial Intelligence in teaching will make teaching more efficient. Consequently, he has advised African educators to adopt and embrace AI rather than watch and worry as new trends in technology unfold.
In a recent webinar hosted by Greensprings Training College and themed “Education in the Age of Artificial Intelligence,” he offered this counsel.
“Everyone is on a learning curve when it comes to AI,” he stated. Therefore, it’s critical that African educators don’t lose out.
As the entire world embraces AI, we must as individuals and as an institution embrace it as well. We must avoid playing the catch-up game, which is adopting AI after the rest of the world has moved on to something more sophisticated.
Expanding upon his suggestion, Oguntoye outlined the educational process from the usage of computers, digital technologies, audiovisuals, and chalkboards to the recently developed artificial intelligence.
He revealed that with the help of technology like artificial intelligence (AI)-powered tutors, personalized learning platforms, automated grading systems, adaptive learning algorithms, and intelligent virtual assistants, learning experiences can now be tailored to each learner’s needs.
Adopting the required mental shift, in his opinion, will enable educators to value artificial intelligence and integrate it into their lesson plans. “Accepting change and understanding that strategies and methods keep on evolving, focusing on the strengths of AI, deliberating working against its weaknesses, and discouraging its abuse” is one of the necessary mindsets he mentioned.
Furthermore, he urged educators to teach their pupils how to use AI sensibly as opposed to abusing it and help the students create creative chatbot prompts to assist with their learning exercises and using AI to generate helpful flashcards to aid in revision.”
