Romania have won at a major international tournament for the first time in 24 years.
This was at the expense of Ukraine, who weren’t helped by two errors from goalkeeper Andriy Lunin.
Romania, tutored by Edward Iordanescu came into this competition with a reputation for lacking goals – with just 16 goals scored in 10 qualifying games – but they managed three on a memorable afternoon in Bavaria, Germany.
Stanciu opened the scoring spectacularly by taking advantage of a mistake by Real Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin, curling a stunning shot from 25 yards that went in off the underside of the bar in the 29th minute.
Lunin, attempting to play out from the back, was at fault again for Romania’s second goal. Shortly after the interval, he let Razvan Marin’s speculative shot slip underneath his body in the 53rd minute.
Four minutes later, Romania sealed the contest with a third goal as Man set up Denis Drăguș, who scored from close range, just kept onside by Artem Dovbyk’s outstretched boot.
This marked the first time Romania scored three goals in a European Championship match since their memorable 3-2 victory over England in June 2000, their only previous win at a Euros finals.
