UEL: Nigeria’s Boniface shines against Hammers

Victor Boniface celebrates after bagging a goal against West Ham United in the Europa League

Super Eagles striker, Victor Boniface, made a triumphant comeback to Europa League play on Thursday, securing a 2-0 win for Bayer Leverkusen against West Ham United with a characteristic header goal.

The Hammers remained resilient throughout most of the game, but substitute Jonas Hofmann finally opened the scoring with a volley in the 83rd minute.

In stoppage time, Boniface, who also came off the bench secured an important second goal by heading in a cross from Hofmann, providing Xabi Alonso’s team with a notable advantage going into the second leg at London Stadium.

Before Thursday night’s match, Boniface had been out of action due to injury for nearly four months.

In another match, Samuel Chukwueze, Nigerian International, joined the action as a substitute for AC Milan in the 78th minute, but despite his contributions, AC Milan couldn’t overcome a resolute Roma side.

Meanwhile, Ademola Lookman, Super Eagles top scorer at the last African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote D’Ivoire, who plays for Atalanta, remained on the bench as an unused substitute while his team shocked Liverpool at Anfield. Gianluca Scamacca scored twice in the 38th and 60th minute, and Mario Pasalic added a third goal in the 83rd minute, sealing a commanding 3-0 win for the Italian side.
