Sven-Goran Eriksson, renowned for managing England’s ‘golden generation’ during the early 2000s, has passed away at the age of 76.
Eriksson was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last year, following a stroke he suffered while out running near his home in Sweden. In a candid interview with a Swedish radio station in January 2024, Eriksson revealed that doctors had given him “at best a year to live.”
The illness had led Eriksson to step down from his role as sporting director at Swedish club Karlstad, marking the end of an illustrious coaching career that spanned across Europe and the globe.
“Sven-Goran Eriksson has passed away,” his family said in a statement. “After a long illness, SGE died during the morning at home surrounded by family.”
It added: “The closest mourners are daughter Lina; son Johan with wife Amana and granddaughter Sky; father Sven; girlfriend Yanisette with son Alcides; brother Lars-Erik with wife Jumnong.
“The family asks for respect for their wish to mourn in private and not be contacted.”
