Nigeria’s D’Tigress’ Rena Wakama has won the best coach at the women’s basketball event in the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
Rene Wakama has made history as the first coach of Nigeria’s National Female Basketball Team to win the Women’s Afrobasket title since the tournament’s inception in 1966.
Under her leadership, the Nigerian team reached the quarter-finals of the tournament for the first time in its history, making them the first-ever African team, male or female, to compete at that stage of the event.
Despite their historic run, Nigeria eventually bowed out of the women’s basketball event, losing 74-88 to the United States.
Recognizing her exceptional leadership, the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) hailed Wakama as the “Best coach of #Paris2024 Women’s Basketball” in a tweet on Sunday evening.
Alongside Wakama, D’Tigress’ point guard, Ezinne Kalu, was honored as part of the All-Second Team for the Olympics Women’s Basketball.
In 2023, Wakama broke new ground as the first female Head Coach of D’Tigress.
Before her head coach appointment, she served as the director of women’s basketball operations and later became an assistant coach in her third year, where she focused on talent development and served as the team’s academic and community service liaison.
