Rangers, El-Kanemi kick off new NPFL season

The 2024/25 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) season begins on Saturday, 31 August, marking a fresh start for Nigerian football. Defending champions, Enugu Rangers, will face El Kanemi Warriors in a novel opening fixture, also serving as a Community Shield match.

Rangers are eager to become the first team in a decade to win consecutive titles, a feat last achieved by Kano Pillars. The opening fixture will air live on StarTimes at 4 p.m.

Title Race and Top Teams:

This season promises a thrilling competition. Five teams, including Kano Pillars, Akwa United, Enyimba, Rivers United, and Remo Stars, are expected to battle for the NPFL title. In contrast to previous years, the unpredictability of the league is heightened by club management instability and key player departures to foreign leagues. For instance, Rivers United lost several top players, weakening their title hopes.

Preseason Performances:

Shooting Stars impressed by winning both the Gold Optimal pre-season tournament and the Coal City Cup, giving them a strong start into the new season. Other clubs like Remo Stars and Enyimba are also set to perform well.

Challenges:

Despite the excitement, the NPFL faces challenges such as the mass exodus of top players and the constant change in management styles. Clubs like Rivers United and Shooting Stars have lost key talents, while others, such as Remo Stars, benefit from better management and investments in young talent.

To address these issues, the NPFL has introduced new regulations and organised seminars on media, security, and fan engagement to ensure smooth operations.

Will Enugu Rangers defend their title, or will new contenders emerge to challenge for the throne? The answer awaits in this exciting new NPFL season.
