Mathias Pogba, the brother of French footballer Paul Pogba, has been sentenced to three years in prison for his involvement in an extortion attempt against his brother.
The Paris court handed down the sentence, with two of the three years suspended. Instead of serving his sentence in jail, Mathias will wear an electronic bracelet for one year.
The case stemmed from an incident in March 2022, when Paul Pogba reported that he was being extorted by childhood friends demanding €13 million. Paul Pogba paid €100,000 to secure his release.
Mathias Pogba was one of six individuals convicted in connection with this case. The other defendants received prison sentences ranging from four to eight years.
Mathias’ lawyer described the ruling as “extremely harsh” and indicated plans to appeal. Mathias has consistently denied wrongdoing, claiming he was manipulated into participating in the extortion attempt.
