Nigerian Paralympic powerlifter Esther Nworgu expressed immense joy after claiming a silver medal at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, describing the achievement as “like heaven.”
Nworgu, who lost the use of her legs as a child, was competing in the up to 41kg bench press category. Despite a shoulder dislocation just two days prior to the event, she narrowly missed out on gold, lifting only one kilogram less than defending champion Cui Zhe from China.
“I was so emotional because I never expected any medal from this competition,” Nworgu said. “I had an injury two days ago, and the doctors confirmed that I should not compete because it was critical.”
The 21-year-old’s determination shone through as she effectively lifted the bar with one arm due to her injury.
Reflecting on her journey, she shared, “I accepted my disability, joined it with the love in my personality, and this (the medal) is the result.”
Nworgu began powerlifting a decade ago and has embraced her abilities despite her challenges. She explained her philosophy: “I don’t like using ‘d-i-s’ in my ability, I like using ‘th-i-s’ in my ability. When there is disability, there is ability.”
Celebrating her win, Nworgu fell to the ground with her coach, Patience Igbiti, a Paralympic medalist herself. Nworgu attributed her success to mental strength, adding, “Nigerians are strong people. Our strength comes from the mind.”
Looking ahead to future Paralympic Games, particularly Los Angeles 2028, Nworgu is determined to “rule her world,” aiming to win more medals, break, and create new world records.
