Egyptian Premier League giants, SC Zamalek, have indicated that they remain open to signing World Cup-winning defender Sergio Ramos, despite challenges posed by his high salary demands.
Zamalek’s media coordinator, Ahmed Shawky, confirmed that Ramos, now a free agent, had been offered to the club through agents and mediators. While acknowledging Ramos’ stellar career and potential value, Shawky noted that financial difficulties could impede the deal, stating, “Sergio Ramos is a fantastic player who would be a huge asset for any club in the Middle East or Africa.”
Speculation about Zamalek’s interest in Ramos began last month, ahead of their September 27, 2024 CAF Super Cup victory against Al-Ahly.
However, Shawky clarified that no concrete steps had been taken due to financial complexities. Zamalek board member Hani Shoukry echoed these concerns, noting that while Ramos welcomed the idea of playing in Egypt, his financial expectations remain a stumbling block.
“The difficulty is in the financial aspects and the amounts requested by the Spanish star,” Shoukry explained.
At 38 years old, Ramos is one of the most decorated players in football history, with two European Championships, a World Cup, five La Liga titles, and four Champions League trophies with Real Madrid, plus two Ligue 1 titles with Paris Saint-Germain.
If the deal materializes, it would be a landmark moment in Egyptian football, potentially elevating the league’s profile internationally, but the financial hurdles remain a significant barrier to securing Ramos’ signature.
