France midfielder Antoine Griezmann has announced his retirement from international football, concluding a remarkable 10-year career with the national team.
Griezmann made the announcement in an emotional social media post on October 1, 2024, expressing gratitude for the experiences and challenges he faced while representing Les Bleus.
“Today, it is with deep emotion that I’m announcing my retirement as a player of the France team,” he wrote.
“After 10 incredible years marked by challenges, successes, and unforgettable moments, it is time for me to turn a page and make way for the new generation. Wearing this jersey was an honour and a privilege.”
The 33-year-old played a pivotal role in France’s triumph at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, scoring in the final against Croatia. He was also integral in the team’s journey to the 2022 World Cup, where they finished as runners-up.
Griezmann earned 137 caps for France, scoring 44 goals, making him the fourth all-time leading scorer for the national team.
Head coach Didier Deschamps praised Griezmann’s contributions, stating, “Antoine will remain a monument of French football, one of the greatest players in its history. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for everything, Grizou.”
Griezmann’s retirement marks the end of an era for the French national team, following the departures of key players such as Hugo Lloris and Raphael Varane after the 2022 World Cup. His last appearance for France was in a UEFA Nations League win against Belgium earlier this month.
