For only the second time in their history, Austria advanced from the group stage of a UEFA European Championship.
Ralf Rangnick’s team achieved this by defeating the Netherlands 3-2 in Berlin, marking their first win in eight encounters and clinching second place in Group D.
Despite knowing that a draw would suffice for both teams to advance to the Round of 16, the game began with high intensity and a clear aim to win the match and the group. Austria dominated early with a high press that kept the Dutch pinned back. Their pressure paid off in six minutes when Alexander Prass’s cross from the left was turned into the net by Donyell Malen, giving Austria the lead.
The first half was an end-to-end battle with both teams creating opportunities. Tijjani Reijnders and Donyell Malen missed chances for the Netherlands, while Marko Arnautovic couldn’t capitalize on a loose ball as Bart Verbruggen’s quick recovery saved his team from going two goals down before halftime.
The high intensity persisted after the break, but now the Netherlands had the upper hand. Xavi Simons drove forward and set up Cody Gakpo, who scored with a precise shot into the far corner.
The Dutch momentum was halted just before the hour when Romano Schmid headed in Florian Grillitsch’s lofted pass to put Austria back in the lead.
The Netherlands pushed hard to equalize and succeeded when Memphis Depay volleyed past Patrick Pentz with 15 minutes left, setting up a thrilling finish.
Austria regained the lead in the 80th minute when Christoph Baumgartner set up Marcel Sabitzer, who scored with a powerful shot. Baumgartner’s attempt at a fourth was ruled out for offside.
Austria held off a late Dutch surge to secure a memorable win. Combined with France’s draw against Poland, this victory earned them first place in Group D, setting up a Round of 16 match against Group F’s runners-up. The Netherlands finished third and may face England next.
