Elumelu exploring possibility of owning NPFL Club

Anthony 'Tony' Onyemaechi Elumelu, Chairperson of UBA

Chairperson of the United Bank for Africa PLC., Anthony Onyemaechi Elumelu also known as Tony O. Elumelu has revealed that a deal to invest in the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) through the ownership of a Football Club is ongoing.

The billionaire made this known on Monday via his X handle after reacting to a post from one Adebayo Mustapha, who had suggested that the President and Ministry of Sports should dialogue with top companies in the country to own clubs in the NPFL and improve the quality of the league.

“Can we get the President and Ministry of Sport to weigh in on the big corporations in Nigeria to buy at least one league club as part of CSR? Imagine Dangote buys Kano Pillars, BUA buys Kwara United, Elumelu acquires Rivers United and Geregu takes over 3SC. Imagine the competition,” wrote Adebayo Mustapha gia his handle @LawyerDayo.

Elumelu responded, saying, “This is a nice idea. The Sports Minister, Senator John Enoh @OwanEnoh, is already thinking along this line and has approached me and we are already evaluating viability.”

It remains to be seen which clubside in the Nigerian Professional Football League would benefit from being owned by Tony Elumelu or any of his peers in the country.
