Bayern Munich’s dominance ends as Leverkusen claims historic Bundesliga

Bayer Leverkusen clinched their inaugural Bundesliga championship with a commanding 5-0 victory against Werder Bremen on Sunday, sealing the title with five matches remaining.

Alonso’s squad maintains an undefeated streak in all tournaments this season, surpassing Bayern Munich’s German record of 32 consecutive matches without a loss across all competitions back in February. The streak now extends to 43 matches across all competitions.

Leverkusen surged ahead in the 25th minute courtesy of Victor Boniface’s penalty, while a long-distance strike from Granit Xhaka in the latter half bolstered their lead, much to the delight of the lively BayArena crowd.

Florian Wirtz capped off the victory with a remarkable goal in the 68th minute, leaving Michael Zetterer with little chance to save in the Werder Bremen goal. Wirtz found the net again in the closing minutes, prompting some spectators to invade the pitch. Wirtz and fellow players gestured for the fans to vacate the field, and the remainder of the match unfolded amidst the haze of pyrotechnics.

However, there was time for Wirtz to cap off a great afternoon with a hattrick.

The outcome marks the conclusion of Bayern’s streak of 11 consecutive Bundesliga titles, leaving both the Bavarian giants and Stuttgart trailing by 16 points.

It represents a remarkable turnaround for Leverkusen since Alonso assumed the role of coach in October 2022.
